CHELCO teams up with local insurance companies to protect property
|
"Having a home that isn’t protected from lightning strikes is a gamble," says CHELCO’s Manager of Marketing, Aaron Bradshaw."
Just one strike could destroy not only your computer or television, but could also destroy larger items such as your refrigerator or your heating and cooling system."
According to Chuck Lawson, a local State Farm Insurance agent, "Since we live in one of the lightning capitals of the world, homeowners are constantly having to file claims for surge damage that could be avoided with proper surge protection."
Along with CHELCO employees, Lawson was instrumental in devising a class for local insurance agents that would teach them how surge protection can help consumers prevent property damage.
CHELCO recently held two day-long sessions of this class at its headquarters in DeFuniak Springs.
Peter Jackson, a surge protection/power quality engineering consultant from
Kenick, Inc. of Jacksonville, taught the class and discussed how the agents could lower or even eliminate some future claims by recommending consumers get surge protection.
"I believe holding this class shows a considerable commitment on CHELCO’s behalf that they took the time to set up these classes for local insurance agents," Jackson said.
"CHELCO’s Marketing Department is determined to get the word out that it’s better to have surge protection on the things that are important than to go through the hassle of trying to replace them."
In addition to holding this class, CHELCO has become the first utility in the state of Florida to be granted permission to link to the State Farm Insurance Co. surge protection
web site.
CHELCO has been offering surge protection to its members for a number of years. The surge protection program at CHELCO starts with an evaluation of a member’s home by a CHELCO Marketing Representative to determine individual surge protection needs. Then, a meter-based unit is offered to protect larger appliances while point-of-use
(P.O.U.) equipment is offered for valuable, sensitive electronics such as televisions and computers.
If you would like more information about protecting your home and electronics with surge protection, contact CHELCO at 850-892-2111, or contact your insurance agent.
