CHELCO provides tips for safe generator use

With Tropical Storm Bonnie and Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Ivan hitting within a month’s time, many CHELCO members are more aware of the need to prepare for emergency weather situations and have purchased generators. If you plan to use a generator, you must connect and operate it properly, or you may injure yourself, a family member or a utility worker who is trying to restore power.

CHELCO offers these tips for connecting and operating portable generators safely:

  • Thoroughly read and understand the operating and maintenance instructions before using your generator. Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Even if your home has lost power, turn off the main power switch before operating a generator. Also, it’s best to unplug all sensitive electronic equipment.
  • Never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. Instead, use extension cords and plug an appliance into the generator. If necessary, rotate usage. For example, keep the refrigerator or freezer plugged in long enough to keep food cold, then switch the generator to another appliance.
  • Provide adequate ventilation for the generator’s exhaust, which contains carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless gas that can be deadly. Never operate a generator indoors, even in an attached garage or carport, because toxic fumes could enter your home.
  • Don’t attempt to refuel the generator while it is running. Use only approved containers for storing gasoline.
  • Keep children away from the generator and the gasoline.
If generators are installed incorrectly, the result may be injury or even death for line crews who are trying to restore power. Line crews may believe a line is de-energized, but the line may have been energized by a portable generator. Current from a generator that is incorrectly hooked up can “backfeed” out of the home and into the transformers serving the home or business. Once the electricity goes into the transformer, it is stepped up to 13,000 volts and enters the local power distribution system.
