Where is the best place in the U.S. for solar and wind generation?

March 10, 2008

As fossil fuel prices continue to rise due to competition for resources and the increased expenses associated with environmental controls, the focus on renewable energy has greatly increased in the United States. This interest addresses a growing need to supplement traditional energy generation in the U.S. Two likely renewable resources that are getting a lot of attention today are wind and solar generation.

While the generation of electricity utilizing wind and solar has become more prevalent in recent years, these resources do have limitations. Wind and solar potential around the country varies, as does installed wind and solar capacity. The places with the best propensity for these types of generation can be viewed utilizing the maps above.

As indicated on the maps, the Southwest is the best location for solar generation facilities. Currently, Arizona is the state with the largest amount of generation utilizing solar energy. The Midwest has the best potential for wind energy generation. As a result, facilities have been built where they can have the greatest impact and do the most good.

In addition to electric utilities exploring renewable resources, many individual consumers have begun installing smaller “home” versions of solar photovoltaic and wind generation systems to support their personal energy use. Both the Federal and State Governments have been providing income tax credits, rebates and other incentives to consumers who have installed these types of systems.

Members who are interested in generating their own electricity and want to find out more information regarding incentives should review the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) website (www.dsireusa.org). Another resource for information regarding solar system generation in the state of Florida is the Florida Solar Energy Center website (www.fsec.ucf.edu).
