When severe weather passes through our area, please be aware of your tornado safety zones. If you are in your house, go to an inside room away from windows, such a bathroom or closet. If you are outside, and see a tornado, get into a ditch or other low-lying area. If your power goes out as the result of the storm, please contact CHELCO at 850-892-2111 or 800-342-0990. In the event of widespread outages, please be patient. CHELCO crews will restore power as soon as it is safe to do so.

Students prepare for Youth Tour

Twenty students representing 10 area schools are preparing to take part in the state's Youth Tour program, which is for high school juniors whose parents are CHELCO members. First they'll learn about cooperatives and our state government in Tallahassee, then they'll compete for a week-long trip to Washington, D.C., during Youth Tour week. This is the trip of a lifetime because the students get a guided tour of all the monuments. In addition, three students who are the children of employees are entered in a separate competition. If you know one of these students, wish them the best. We can only send four out of the group of 20. More updates will follow as things happen.

CHELCO's Power Talk Forum has been a parat of the Website since August as a trial into social media. Members may read the Forum and comment, but you must register your email address to comment. To date, no one has registered and commented about the postings. We would like to know if you are reading the information provided and not posting. The Forum was started to provide CHELCO members with up-to-date info on a variety of topics, especially storm outages. The last storm season was uneventful, so nothing was posted on that topic. If you read the Forum and have suggestions, please let us know. If the Forum proves to be an avenue of communication that is not used, we will delete it in February.

Give Energy Efficient Gifts for Christmas

If you're stumped on what to buy someone who has everything, consider giving a gift of energy efficiency. When buying kitchen appliances and televisions, make sure they are marked with the Energy Star logo. Make a basket filled with products that can make a home more energy efficient, such as caulk, weather stripping, a programmable thermostat, a power strip for those vampire electronics and CFL bulbs. You'll make someone very happy this Christmas.

2011 Storm Season almost at an end
 kmorrow Administrator Posts: 27

The 2011 storm season is almost over, but don't breathe a sigh of relief yet. Hurricane season officially ends on Nov. 30, so stay prepared until it comes to an end. The area has been lucky this year, again, but it pays to be prepared in the event something does happen. CHELCO stays ready 24-7-365, which many members realized when Tropical Storm Lee rolled through the area. CHELCO crews responded quickly, working through the weather to get members' power restored as quickly and safely as possible. Even as Nov. 30 nears, we won't let our guard down.

Care for your homes' HVAC systems

Right now we're enjoying some nice days and nights without the need for air conditioning or heating. But cooler days are on the way, and it won't be long before you'll be turning the heat on. While we're in between seasons, let a service technician perform an annual inspection on your heating, ventilation and cooling (HVAC) system. A quick tune-up will help keep costly repairs to a minimum. Between visits, remember to change the filter regularly and remove plants or other debris from the outdoor air conditioning equipment. Vacuum indoor registers and air vents regularly. Also, move furniture and drapes away from registers.

Prepaid Metering
 kmorrow Administrator Posts: 27

We pay for food, gas and cell phone minutes before we use them. Now you can do the same with your electric service. Prepaid Metering is growing in popularity at CHELCO. Prepaying helps consumers plan more accurate monthly budgets and make smaller payments. If you only have $10 to put gas in your car, that's what you do. The same goes for prepaid electricity. It's just like filling up your car. Studies show that members who prepay generally use 10-15 percent less energy than folks on traditional billing. Another benefit for members is that the program eliminates the need for deposits, late fees, and disconnect and reconnect fees. IF you want to learn more about the program, go to www.chelco.com or contact CHELCO's Customer Care Center at 892-2111 or 800-342-0990. Sign up today and save yourself some money.
